Google will allow searching for personal data that appears in search results

Google is bringing to Brazil a tool to find personal data, such as address, email and phone number that may appear in search engine results, according to an announcement made at a company event on June 11.

Personal data can be used in a series of virtual frauds. Fraudsters can use it to impersonate other people on social media in order to request transfers via Pix or even to open fake accounts in financial institutions that are less rigorous in the registration process.

“For data that you prefer to keep private, you can quickly ask Google to remove it, right within the tool itself,” the company’s announcement says.

Asked about criminals who push fraudulent ads on Google, often using data stolen from third parties, the executive said the platform is constantly fighting against illegal activities that make the internet worse as a whole.

How to request removal of personal information

The feature can be accessed in the Google smartphone app by clicking on your profile picture. Then, you need to select “Privacy in results about you.”

You can also access it by clicking on the three dots next to individual results in a Google search done in a browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.

After you submit a removal request, Google will check to see if this information appears in the Search results and if there are any new results about the user. The information will appear in the “Results to review” tab, where you can make removal requests.

The first step is to access “Privacy in Results About You”. On a desktop browser, the page is located at this link. In the Google app on your smartphone, you need to tap on your profile picture and then select “Privacy in Results About You”.
