This is what you can do to appear in the media
If you follow me on social media, you already knew that I was in an article in La República (the main economic media in Colombia), talking about Generation Z and Social Media .
This is not the first time this has happened and I don't think it will be the last.
I honestly can't remember how many times I've been in the media, but I think it must be over 50.
I have been fortunate to appear on Caracol Noticias, El Tiempo, RCN, NTN, W Radio, Blu Radio… well, if I mention them all, it would become a very boring text for you. Unless you are a close friend who is happy for me and my achievements. Thanks Roci, it's with you.
Now, what the hell is the point of appearing in the media? I'll answer that in more depth in the next Marmogram , but in short, it validates you as an expert on a topic, as a reference. Not everyone appears in the media.
And if you do it right, it will also bring you clients.
So, how the hell do you get into the media? I'm not going to give you a magic formula, but I'll tell you how I did it.
This is not a plan that you have to follow to the letter, nor are they in any order. They are simply tips that you can implement.
What have I done to appear in the media?
Having friends in the media. I say this first, not because it is the only way, nor the most appropriate, but it is a fact: It helps.
I mention this first to leave behind that false halo of superiority that many “gurus” will have, who only inflate their ego.
I mean, I'm going to go on about it, not even if I'm an idiot, but I'll also explain.
So… if you have friends, they can call you.
Now my clarification: I am a systems engineer, one of those who writes code vietnam email address in front of a computer all day. I didn't know any journalists or anything like that. Now I do know several people, and I achieved that with my Personal Brand. This is where you think "if Omar could do it, I should be able to too."
Which brings me to the following tips.
Be good at what you do. It's obvious and basic, but sometimes it's forgotten. If you're going to appear on a newscast and say stupid things, it's better not to appear. When someone knows what they're talking about, it shows, and vice versa.
Stand out in some way. If you are “just another one,” there won’t be many reasons to call you and not your competition. Differentiate yourself.
But Marmot, how do I stand out when there are so many people doing the same thing? Again, there are no magic formulas, but I think the best way to achieve it is by being yourself. That word you often say, yes, that catchphrase, keep using it.
You can read a lot of emails and posts on social media that talk about Personal Branding, but none of them will tell you the way I do. For better or worse.
You can search for the notes yourself, especially if you do or know something that the media might find interesting: a novel event, an innovation, etc.
When you appear in a media outlet, share it on your social networks, publicly thanking the outlet or the journalist. In the end, what they are looking for is traffic, audience. So you help a little bit in that area too. And if you help the outlet, they will keep calling you.
