Upper management sets the business strategy. Middle management forms the first task level, followed by the team leader and the team itself. In this way, tasks are processed in a results-oriented manner. There are clear positions with clear job descriptions. The function determines the position in the company.

In process-oriented companies, the operational orientation also starts with the strategy. The specifications from upper management are now mapped out using process models. Middle management is not necessarily divided into specialist areas - here, the types of processes and process types dictate the division and allocation. Teams are oriented towards process chains and work through the task packages in a customer-oriented manner. The roles determine the positions in the company.

No right and no wrong
Depending on personal perspective and inclination, one of the above structural models is preferred or is formed based on the company culture. The function-oriented model, which emerged from Taylorism, proved to be practical in the 20th century. What worked when there was little competitive pressure shows its weaknesses very clearly in times of high market pressure. The functional areas (departments), often referred to as silos, hinder the necessary interaction for competitiveness.
