Furthermore, when using the legitimate type of pop-ups, we see many occasions where users complain that their user experience is being impaired. What are the reasons for that? We identified a few main reasons:

Displaying pop-ups immediately without founder email lists context or distinction: When the user encounters a pop-up before they can explore the content, they may feel that their user experience is being compromised. There are cases where a pop-up that is displayed immediately can be beneficial (for example, in some cases, when subscribing to a newsletter).
The wrong message at the wrong time – A pop-up offering technical support to the user when they visit your pricing page may get little response. Since the visitor showed interest in pricing, there is no reason to reach out about technical support. It is critical that the message conveyed to the visitor is the right message at the right time.
High Frequency – A website that displays pop-ups too frequently (e.g. every 5 minutes) is sure to annoy its visitors.
Why pop-ups can significantly increase conversion rates? Two case studies
Before we understand the main reasons why popups can bring a huge improvement in conversion rates, let’s review two different success stories where website owners used popups:

who runs an online Etsy shop called Nikki In Stitches. Nikki’s secondary goal with the website was to grow her email list. Nikki’s website had a sidebox that invited people to sign up for her newsletter.

The box generated an average conversion rate of 0.4%. Nikki decided to implement a type of popup called a LightBox on her site, which would have the same functionality and encourage people to join the newsletter.

The popup saw a 5.5% conversion rate!! That’s to say, the popup grew by 1375% compared to the sidebox (effectively, Nikki reached thousands of additional users who signed up for her newsletter).
Darren Rowse is a professional photographer who runs a blog about photography. Darren has gained 40 new subscribers for his daily newsletter; he wasn’t complaining about the number of subscribers, but rather looking for ways to grow his email list.

Darren, an internet marketing enthusiast, decided to implement pop-ups on his website (using a fairly basic design…). Thanks to the pop-up, which offered visitors regular updates on blog posts, Darren managed to increase the number of subscribers to his newsletter to 350 per day – an increase of 875% !

Analyzing the huge success achieved by pop-ups, we found some essential elements that are relevant every time a pop-up is successfully displayed and produces a high-quality conversion.
