IT leaders need to think about data protection in a pre-quantum world

"In the next 10 to 15 years, large-scale quantum computers will be available that can break RSA and ECC public-key cryptography," said Dr. Brian Lamacchia of Microsoft Research.

If the problem of decrypting data is being tackled by NIST, a US federal government agency that invests heavily in quantum computing, and a company that develops cybersecurity solutions based on SSL/TLS and PKI encryption protocols, there is every reason to believe that the threat of quantum hacking of modern cryptography methods is real and should not be taken lightly. In fact, this threat has spurred the search for solutions to prevent quantum attacks, one of which was the emergence of the PQC concept.

It is participating in the NIST call for proposals to develop standards for PQC. NIST emphasizes the importance of creating PQC with the following statement: “Historically, it has taken nearly two decades to deploy modern public-key cryptographic infrastructure. So whether or not we can accurately estimate when the quantum era will arrive, we must begin preparing our security systems to withstand the threat of quantum attacks.”

DigiCert, in collaboration with security vendor Utimaco and Microsoft, is developing a next-generation PKI that should address the main problems associated with the threat to modern encryption methods. “Our goal is to develop hybrid certificates for long-term protection that will include quantum-resistant algorithms in addition to RSA and ECC,” said Avesta Khodjati, head of research at DigiCert Labs.
