Digital transformation has revolutionised the market, companies, sectors and the demands of all of them. How we communicate, how we buy, how we move and also how we work.
There are several reports such as the World Economic Forum's " Future of Jobs " that predict the rise of certain professions and the decline of others. So, which are the sectors that create the most jobs in Spain at the moment?
The latest Active Population Survey (EPA) shows that there were almost 40 economic activities that gained jobs between January and March, while the remaining 60 lost jobs.
Rising sectors
The list of sectors that created the most jobs in a traditionally bad quarter for the labour market is headed by education activities , where 46,200 jobs were created in the first quarter; 111,000 year-on-year.
Secondly, construction has also been a powerful source of job creation, with all its branches showing positive results. Building construction has added 73,900 workers in the last twelve months and has more than half a million employees, followed by specialized construction (49,200 more employees) and civil engineering (6,500).
Next in line are land and pipeline transport and retail trade , which have generated 54,200 and 52,800 new jobs since the beginning of 2018. These increases are linked above all to increases in trade in all its areas, which includes vehicle sales and air transport as well as food and beverage services.
However, it is in the area of business-related services where there are the largest number of employment niches. This includes office administrative activities and other activities supporting companies such as legal and accounting, security, computer programming and consulting, building and gardening services, and technical architectural and engineering services.
Industry also has positive figures. Mineral products, pharmaceuticals and beverages are the sectors that are on the rise, followed by the chemical, metallurgy, textile and motor vehicle industries, among others.
Education is a growing sector
Sectors that are losing jobs
Over the past twelve months, there have been several sectors that have seen job losses. These include storage and activities related to transport, insurance and pension funds, the food industry, financial services and telecommunications.
However, one of the “star” sectors that has suffered the most was the hospitality sector. Both bars and restaurants and hotels and other accommodation services lost 51,600 and 35,200 jobs, respectively, during the first quarter of 2019. Tourism also suffered a decline in favour of Türkiye.
Professions of the near future
The big data industry is still very current but it continues to grow and, consequently, demands highly specialized professionals such as data analysts and scientists.
From their hand come the specialists in the Internet of Things. with connected devices and machines, so the need for people trained in connectivity, edge computing and cloud computing , industrial and business integration or platform development, as well as in cybersecurity, data protection and social networks is growing.
In addition, although it may seem shocking, current programming, lawyer emails development and technological innovation require mathematicians with computer skills.
The retail sector is also undergoing a change , with an increasing need for shop assistants and salespeople who are specialised in retail and distribution, and who also have language and computer skills.
Finally, as a direct consequence of the rise of e-commerce, the profile of order pickers with training in logistics systems is born.
