Instagram is primarily a social network where users connect and share pictures and videos from their everyday lives. To avoid compromising this nature of the platform, the number of advertising placements on the platform is limited. An auction system allocates ad spaces, meaning advertisers bid for the space.

But who wins the auction? How does the Instagram algorithm decide which ads are usa phone number data shown to which users? First of all, one thing is clear: The highest bidder doesn't simply win. Instagram's goal is to entertain its users and keep them on its platform for as long as possible. It would therefore not be beneficial to simply randomly display the ads with the highest bid. Instead, other factors influence the display, such as the content of the Instagram ad and its relevance to the target audience. When users see content they like, they interact with it and want to see more. This keeps them on the platform longer.

Every time a user opens the Instagram app, a decision is made in seconds based on user behavior as to which Instagram ad gets which slot. Therefore, according to the algorithm, the first ad you see in your feed is the most relevant to you.

Nobody knows 100% which factors influence the outcome, but roughly speaking there are three points:

Advertiser bid
Relevance of the ad for the user
Probability that the user will perform the conversion event that was optimized for (e.g. purchase or click)
All three of these factors influence where your Instagram ad will be displayed and how much it will cost.
