The month of July 2022 will certainly be marked in the history of Brazilian technology as the month when 5G arrived in Brazil. It is worth mentioning that worldwide, it has existed since 2019, but here, due to a variety of issues (which are not worth delving into), we suffered a delay in its implementation.

Naturally, a technological evolution like this will have a profound impact on digital marketing in the future and that is exactly what we will talk about today: the perspectives and possibilities that 5G should bring.

What is 5G?
You've probably already read/seen about it, but let's refresh your memory. This is the fifth generation of wireless mobile connection (and yes, the "G" simply stands for "generation"). It brings a huge evolutionary leap over the current 4G that is available on the vast majority of cell phones on the market today.

Among the main developments, we have:

Increased speed – cutting-edge 4G connections austria phone number list currently reach a maximum of 100 MBPs, with 5G it should reach between 1 and 10 GBPs, which would make browsing at least 10 times faster;
Reduced latency – do you know when you’re watching something live or making a call and there’s that “delay”? This is latency, which is the time it takes for data to travel from the source to the destination. Today, the average is 50 to 70 milliseconds, but with 5G it’s expected to be between 1 and 5 milliseconds;
Support for large content – this is a direct consequence of the above cases. In other words, 4K videos should become more common;
Greater connectivity – as devices can connect to multiple signal transmitters, the chances of the internet dropping or fluctuating will be much lower. In addition, it will also be possible to have more devices connected to the same network without losing speed.
With all this, a new range of possibilities is created involving not only the traditional internet, but also the internet of things (IoT), which is nothing more than the internet used in domestic devices or personal objects.

How could 5G impact digital marketing?
What we currently know is that the changes will be considerable, especially in terms of content production. For example, virtual reality could be applied on a larger scale, considering that we will have faster internet and the possibility of quickly transmitting heavier content. This part also involves the concept of the metaverse .

This will allow us to have campaigns involving 360 virtual experiences such as tours, shows, among others. It should also have an impact on the issue of augmented reality , creating new possibilities for uses, such as the popularization of the virtual mannequin, in which the person “tries on” the clothes and visualizes them through their screen.

We may see an increase in marketing actions through streamers, live broadcasts or other types of virtual broadcasts (depending on the age group of your target audience). There is even the possibility of gamification, with campaigns using interactive promotional games to increase the brand's reach.

There is also the issue of self-driving cars, which can become a powerful marketing tool, especially for commercial establishments. The explanation is: imagine that a person took a self-driving car right after arriving in a city they don't know and want to eat something?

There will be many digital marketing opportunities here, as the car will already have an entire electronic system, and it will be able to suggest places along the way for leisure, rest, food, events, all based on the history of the customer in question.

The possibilities that open up are countless, but at the same time they should not alarm those who are not yet familiar with this technology…

Prospects for massive implementation
Looking at the national level alone, we can certainly wait a few years to see 5G implemented on a large scale. In addition to being a new technology that most devices don't even support, those that can already use it are top-of-the-line models , which in Brazil today have even more restricted access.

Add to this the fact that by the end of the year the trend is for only capitals to have 5G implemented, with cities with 500,000+ inhabitants having access to the new technology throughout 2023 (but with no defined schedule).

With all this, many will not be in a hurry to change their equipment, since they will not even have access to 5G functionalities or will still have access to the newly implemented technology, which can suffer from the most varied types of problems (just look at 4G, which even today is far from being perfect).

So it is worth starting to have in mind a future with new possibilities in digital marketing, but at the same time, you can have the peace of mind of making this transition without rushing, as it will still take time for 5G to be implemented massively here.
