The vaccination goal: reaching 70% of Spaniards
The President of the Executive, Pedro Sánchez, has assured that in the months of April and May vaccination will begin to gain momentum in Spain. In terms of forecasts, the political leader has also announced that, in the week of July 19, it is expected that 25 million people will be vaccinated and that 70 percent of the population, that is, 33 million, should be immunized by the end of August.
But why is it so important to reach this figure? Because it allows us to reach the desired herd immunity , a theoretical concept that represents the level of collective protection that would be enough to stop the transmission of the virus, even without restrictions. The main benefit would be that the risk of contagion would decrease to minimal levels, and the mortality rate could even be reduced by 60%.
The road to achieving this is long, because it requires a great effort in planning, distribution and communication between autonomous communities. To date, 15.435 billion doses have been received and 14.266 billion have been administered , which indicates that another six months would be needed to achieve the 70% target that health authorities have set for the summer.
