Since 2006, he worked as a specialist in the stock and credit operations department, a financial analyst, a specialist in the regional audit department, a senior specialist in the internal control department at EuroAxis Bank CJSC, VEFK Bank OJSC, and Renaissance Capital CB.
In 2008, Bakanov moved to the IT sector, joining Sitronics OJSC, where he rose through the ranks from a specialist in the internal control and audit department to the head of the procurement department.
In 2011, the future head of Roscosmos began working in the space industry: he was the president, and from October 2016, the general director of the Gonets Satellite System company, which was engaged in the creation of a multifunctional personal satellite communications system (MSPSS) based on low-orbit spacecraft.
In 2019, Bakanov became a civil servant, joining the Russian Ministry of Transport as Director of the Digital Transformation Department. There, he was responsible for introducing innovations into the transport sector, including rail, aviation, and maritime.
In addition, the future head of Roscosmos was the executive director of Postal Logistics Company LLC, created in 2021 and part of the Russian Post structure.
