The object for which a BIM model had to be made was the Mikhailovsky Hospital complex in Tbilisi. The complex itself looks quite impressive and includes four buildings. All the buildings are made in different styles: there are facades in neo-Gothic and neoclassical styles, as well as two small outbuildings in the traditional Georgian style. Recently, the complex was abandoned, but before that, for 150 years, it served as a hospital. There were also pharmacies and living quarters for doctors.

Many of the hospital buildings have beautiful historic interiors from the 19th century. Werner Sobek wanted to preserve as many of these interiors as possible in the project and to convey the geometry, shapes and all existing elements as accurately as possible.

Nevertheless, the reconstruction concept involves significant revision of the buildings' architecture and transformation of the complex into one of the city's cultural life centers with the creation of lecture halls, art spaces, lecture halls, etc. Therefore, the project provides for many changes: demolition of later extensions with lower cultural value and subsequent expansion of buildings both underground and above ground. However, most of the historical facades will be preserved. According to Nikita Arsentyev, the 4D BIM approach helps them a lot in implementing the concept: without it, it would be very difficult to take into account all the nuances.

Since the authors of the new concept for the complex were architects from a well-known French bureau, who create objects even in Paris, a great responsibility was placed on the BIM specialists at Werner Sobek. Therefore, to develop a high-quality information model, they first performed laser scanning of the buildings.

In carrying out this task, they encountered many obstacles in the form of the emergency state of the building: the hospital buildings had been abandoned for several years, and there had been several fires in them.

According to Nikita Arsenyev, it is always worth remembering that laser scanning of such objects is always a kind of "research". Since there are very few original drawings that would help in developing a digital model of the building, scanning specialists often find some unexpected elements.

Therefore, when digitizing such historical buildings, you always need to allocate a little extra time, as well as personal protective equipment. Nikita Arsentyev advised going out on field work in small teams: firstly, observing each other allows you to warn colleagues about possible dangers. Secondly, if you want to get a really high-quality information model of a historical building, it is best to inspect all its nooks and crannies with your eyes, so as not to get unpredictable results later.
