Edge computing is rapidly evolving from theory to practice. Experts interviewed by Enterprisers Project discuss three real - world use cases that are opening up new business opportunities.
The basic concepts of edge computing are relatively simple to understand. Like a centralized data center, edge infrastructure provides the computing and other resources that applications require, but it also keeps those requirements physically close to the applications and their data. The term “edge server” refers to moving traditional server functions closer to their most optimal location, whether for performance, security, cost, or other reasons.
By definition, edge servers are located outside of the canada mobile database data center and perform compute, networking, storage, and security functions close to where users need them—for example, where data is created in healthcare facilities or manufacturing.
Edge computing expands the meaning of the traditional IT term “onpremises.” Instead of referring to a physical data center or other centralized location, with edge computing, “onpremises” can be virtually anywhere your applications and data reside.
Once the concept is clear, the natural next question is: what can I do with edge computing?
This is a very broad area, and some use cases are very promising. For example, there is a lot of talk about the relationship between Edge, IoT, and 5G — even if the last part of this trio is not ready to go live yet. But these categories feed off each other, which creates additional interest and excitement.
